Snorkeling Kauai

If you can swim, consider snorkeling Kauai. Even if you can't swim, you can snorkel the underwater gardens of the Garden Isle thanks to the floatation devices found at popular Hawaii snorkeling vendors, like Snorkel Bob's. Snorkeling Kauai is an experience not to be missed!

Snorkeling is one of my favorite Kauai activities. The Garden Isle offers one of the oldest and most protected coral reef ecosystems of the main Hawaiian Islands. In fact, one third of the hundreds of species of fish found in Kauai's reefs are found nowhere else on Earth.

Rent snorkeling equipment or take a snorkeling boat tour to off shore reefs and let the Hawaii snorkeling specialists show you how.

Among the best snorkeling spots in Kauai, is the reef off Ke`e Beach – when conditions are right. This popular spot is located at Haena Beach Park where the road ends and the Na Pali Coast's Kalalau Trail begins.

At Ke`e you'll see colorful reef fish, including raccoon, butterflyfish and parrot fish. However, rip currents can be deadly here, so check with the lifeguard before entering.

A couple of the best snorkeling spots in Kauai for beginners include Anini Beach and the protected cove of Salt Pond Beach Park. Poipu, a popular family beach on the sunny south of the island is also a good spot for beginners.

Snorkeling guides and vendors like Snorkel Bob's will be happy to share their recommendations for the best snorkeling spots on Kauai, based on what you share with them about your ability.

As with all Hawaii snorkeling, wherever you snorkel (or swim, surf, etc.) in Kauai, check the ocean conditions first. Kauai averages 10 drownings per year. So play it safe by snorkeling with others at a life guarded spot or with a snorkeling Kauai cruise.

Snorkeling Kauai is a wonderful way to view colorful, tropical fish as well as Hawaiian green sea turtles and even endangered Hawaiian monk seals. Enjoy but don't touch. It's bad for them and can get you a stiff fine.
