another option I didn’t know about then that could be very helpful: There's a mini-hotel just outside the airport that offers a clean, economical and friendly place to stay to sleep and shower. You’re not paying for aesthetics or amenities here because there are none, but a good night’s sleep before you spend your first beautiful morning outdoors in Hawaii is all you need.
The Nimitz Shower Tree Hotel operates on a cash basis only for locals, but they make an exception for mainland visitors to Hawaii who want to reserve a room and pay by money order in advance. Rates for reserved rooms for two range from $55 to $75 and for one from $43 to $55. You share a bath and shower, but they say they clean after each shower (which is more than health clubs do). If for some reason, you want to make Waikiki your home base, they also offer weekly rates, but this would cost more than to stay in a yurt at a beautiful beach.
