After my last experience though, I wouldn't book with anything less than a three-star.Most hotel/air or hotel/air/car packages, as good a deal as many are, won’t allow for a Hawaiian vacation on a shoestring. However, the savings per person goes up with the amount of people in your party, and of course, especially during the off season as discussed in the previous chapter on air fares (roughly, October through May with the exception of holiday seasons).
For example checking fares in October on Hotwire.com for a package for two adults and one child that includes a three-star hotel, rental car for the week, and air fare (round trip LAX-HNL), I found one that breaks down to $548 per person, including taxes. For one person, the same package was $860 a person, including taxes. The $548 package would leave just enough for food and fuel/parking for the car. Not an ideal eco-vacation. If you do go this route, be sure to get a room with a kitchenette and shop for groceries outside of Waikiki, better yet...
