Our flight arrived in Honolulu around 11 p.m., so I’d booked a Waikiki two-star hotel for our first night since it was too late to find our campground on the other side of Oahu near the North Shore. Knowing what I know now, I would never risk spending this much money on a two-star hotel unless I’ve either seen it myself or have a recommendation from a well-trusted source. I figured since this was just for sleeping and quick showers before our real vacation began, no big deal.
The picture on the Internet of the hotel rooms was appealing, but I should have known better than to go by a set-up photo. The section of town in East Waikiki wasn’t the kind of place where I’d let my 12- year-old even cross the street alone to get some milk at the store. Sightseeing highlights for my son and husband included colorful, Waikiki hookers.
But the linens were fresh, we were exhausted and at this late hour we weren’t going to search for something else.
We’d already lost a lot of sleep driving from Southern Oregon to L.A. where we visited family before catching our flight. We took note that a mirrored closet door was off track and cracked, turned up the air conditioning, and slept – until we were awakened by what sounded like construction vehicles....
