(Cont'd from Chap. 1, Part 6), these tips are an excerpt from the first edition of: Hawaii Eco Budget Travel Guide to Oahu) The $750 budget covers airfare and everything in Hawaii, but if you don’t have someone to take you to the airport, here are some suggestions that will save you money. If you’ve got a ride to the airport, you can skip this chapter.
AIRPORT PARKING
If you were to drive into LAX and pay for parking there, you’d pay 9.95 per day based on 8 days outdoor self parking. It’s a dollar more per day for vans, SUV’s and pick-ups. Indoors, covered with valet service and free shuttle is $12.95 per day. That’s about $80 for outdoor parking ($87 plus tip for valet) and $100 indoor.
However, you can cut this cost in half by reserving your airport parking online at a trust venue...
For example in June (2005) you could book a four-star customer rated parking space for $45 at LAX for a week and $60 for a four-star (or $65 will get you a five star) at SFO. Portland had only two choices, but both five stars, the lowest at $47.
SHUTTLES
If you live near to or are staying with someone within a couple hours of the airport, you may want to consider a shuttle. This will save you the headaches of airport traffic and could save you money, especially if you are traveling alone.
You will find many shuttle services simply by typing in “shuttle” plus the name of your airport into your favorite search engine. Be sure to check the shuttle company’s credentials and any hidden fees.
A free to use site, AirportService.com helps you find shuttles including limos and mini-vans. They say they list only transportation providers who service the airports regularly, thus avoiding fly-by-night (pun intended) rip-off “businesses.” To read this chapter in its entirety, with all the listings and updated, along with the entire 132 guide in its latest edition, check out my
