You know before you purchase the ticket if your departure will be morning, afternoon, evening or late evening while their Clearance Fares save the most money and appear for flights where Hotwire's airline partners have the most empty seats.
Whispering a wish that we wouldn’t be given an early morning flight, I typed in my bank card information. My confirmation came up, and I got my wish. You know what they say about being careful what you wish for? We had an evening flight, but that meant landing at Honolulu at 11 p.m., that is 1 a.m. Mainland time. Not only would the gate at our campground be locked, we were pretty tired by the time we picked up the rental car. With the additional “Flex Fares’ that Hotwire.com now offers I would have been able to pin it down to morning or afternoon for only $20 more. Still we were happy to be in Hawaii!
We stayed in a hotel the first night because I hadn’t thought about better alternatives (more on those later) for late night arrivals.
