Is Camping in Hawaii safe?

(The following is an excerpt cont'd from the Hawaii Eco Budget Guide to Oahu)  The problem with the $178 fare was it was only good to Honolulu, and I was hoping to camp on the Neighbor island of Hawaii (the Big Island) because as I’ve mentioned Oahu isn’t exactly known for family campgrounds. Some seem to have an unwritten “locals only” rule, which I quite understand and respect, while others, are rowdy, have drug related altercations, and/or unsightly litter.

While there are decent two-star hotels, I’d been to Oahu enough to know that I didn’t want to take my chances sight unseen and in the case of Hotwire.com, name unknown. Granted, there are some good package deals with three-star and upwards hotels, but when you multiply times three, camping and some of the alternative lodging options made a lot more sense financially.

Besides, camping in Hawaii is a wonderful way to relax into the rhythm of the island. I liked the idea of sleeping near the ocean, watching the sunrise in the morning, enjoying the campfire and stars at night, being lulled to sleep by the ocean, getting acquainted with camping neighbors, and all the other benefits of pitching a tent on a beach.

I knew the camping scene on the Big Island, but to afford the airfare there for the three of us, I’d have to save much longer, and being the patient person that I am, I wanted to go yesterday. So I did some research.

After a few hours of online research and calls to Oahu, I was getting pretty excited.

There have been some very positive developments in the Oahu camping and alternative lodging scene that even my friends who grew up on Oahu weren’t aware of yet!

I researched them by reading reviews at a variety of Websites and calling them and asking lots of questions. Confident that two and maybe three of my selections would be just what I wanted (and two were), I quickly made reservations for three flights roundtrip from Los Angeles to  Honolulu....
