Hawaii golf vacations are a must for anyone that loves the challenge of a good round of golf. The Islands offer some of the most beautiful and scenic courses in the entire world and some of the most famous course designers are represented here in the state of Hawaii. And the best part is……..a lot more courses are becoming environmentally sensitive.
Eco Hawaii Golf Vacations on Oahu
The Turtle Bay Resort features The Links, a championship course designed by Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay reminiscent of an authentic Scottish links course. This environmentally sensitive course circles and bridges over the Punahoolapa Marsh, a protected wetland for at least five endangered Hawaiian waterfowl.
Another can’t-miss Hawaii golf vacations spot on the island of Oahu is the Ewa Beach Golf Club, designed by Robin Nelson, world renowned for designing eco-friendly golf courses. This is another “links style course” where you are sure to see some Hawaiian stilts (the Ae’o), an endangered species that is indigenous to the area.
One of the environmentally-sensitive features at Ewa Beach is the Seashore Paspalum grass known as “environmentally friendly turf,” which makes up eighty-five percent of the grass on the course, which can be irrigated with non potable water, saving millions of gallons of freshwater each year.
Eco Hawaii Golf Vacations on Kauai
The island of Kauai also has an excellent eco-friendly place to chase the little white ball, the Poipu Bay Course. This golf course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. who working with Kauai's incredible natural beauty has created a stunning and award-winning golf course for golfers of all skill levels. Some of the incredible distractions here are the resident endangered Nene (Hawaiian goose) and Hawaiian ducks that frequent the ponds, as well as the endangered green sea turtles, humpback whales and rare monk seals that are seen off the cliffs.
This beautiful course includes over 30 acres of tropical plants and flowers, and was designed to preserve an ancient Hawaiian fishing heiau (places of worship), which is kapu (off limits) and out of bounds to the golfers.
Eco Hawaii Golf Vacations on Maui
Not to be left out where eco-friendly golfing can be found is the island of Maui, which features the Kapalua Golf Resort Courses - Recognized by Golf Magazine as Hawaii's Best golf resort; Kapulua offers two golf courses that are situated on Maui's northwestern shore at the rolling foothills of Puu Kukui and are Certified Audubon Sanctuaries as are only 2% of all golf courses in the world.
The Bay Course, designed by Arnold Palmer and Francis Duane, is resort golf at its best. The 6,600-yard Bay Course is a par 72 with undulating fairways and expansive greens.
The 7,411-yard Plantation Course is a par 73 monster and rightly known as the “course of champions.” Home to the PGA TOUR Mercedes-Benz Championship, the course was designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw and plays across interesting natural landscapes and picturesque pineapple fields.
Eco Hawaii Golf Vacations on the Big Island (Hawaii Island)
Some of the most popular Hawaii golf vacations and also eco-friendly courses can be found on the Big Island. The Mauna Lani Resort featuring two magnificent championship golf courses, the North Course and the South Course, that combine ancient lava-tube dwellings, spring fed ponds and naturally preserved trails throughout presenting nature at its best and presenting a challenge for novices and professional golfers alike. The Mauna Lani Resort uses a unique photovoltaic setup generating the most solar energy to power this luxury resort than anywhere else in the world and with very little impact on the environment.
Named “The Course of the Future” in 1997 by the USGA, Hapuna is a beautiful 18-hole championship course designed by Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay. Wildlife biologists credit the creation of this course for the doubling of native bird species that call the area home, including the pueo, the Hawaiian owl that is highly significant to Hawaiian culture.
Golf Magazine called Hapuna Golf Course the most environmentally sensitive course in Hawaii, and the USGA rates it as among the most environmentally sensitive courses anywhere in the United States. This course is unique and a challenge for golfers of all skill levels and offers views of the Kohala Coast and the sometimes snow capped Mauna Kea volcano.
Hawaii golf vacations that include any of these eco-sensitive and absolutely incredible courses are a must-do for any avid golfer who also cares about nature.
